Waukesha County is a stronghold of innovation and entrepreneurship in the State of Wisconsin. Waukesha County inventors and businesses licensed over 3,800 patents between 2000 and 2010 – comprising over 15% of the total for the state during this time period.

 

GE Healthcare generated over 1,500 patents – the leading assignee in Wisconsin. Other Waukesha County R&D-based businesses such as Quad/Graphics and HUSCO International had strong patenting activity.  From 1997–2008, 1.81 patents per 1,000 workers were licensed in Waukesha County (versus the national average of .51).

 
A nationwide Innovation Index rates Waukesha County #1 in Wisconsin based on several measures, including:

  • education
  • technology-based knowledge employment
  • strong employment growth relative to population
  • GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per worker
  • improvement in earnings per worker

 

 

 

 

From 2000–2011 over $442,890,00 in SBA loans were made to small businesses in Waukesha County (#2 in Wisconsin in the total number and amount of loans, with nearly 10% of total loans in State).
