[2010 total population 383,864]
Whether each of Waukesha County's 37 municipalities is listed as a village, town or city, is dependent not only on the community's population or area, but in large part on the form of government selected by the residents and approved by the Wisconsn State Legislature.

VILLAGE
Villages in Waukesha County provide various services to its residents and have a degree of home rule and taxing jurisdiction over them. The home rule authority granted to villages allows them to make their own decisions about their affairs, administration and a good deal of their public policy, subject to state law. Villages are governed by a Village President (or Village Manager) and a Board of Trustees.
TOWN
Towns in Waukesha County provide a limited number of services to its residents and have less home rule authority then villages or cities. They do not, for instance, have home rule granted to them by the state, but instead only have specific powers granted to them under state statute. Towns are governed by Town Boards, with the Board Chairperson at its head.
CITY
Cities in Waukesha County provide almost all services to its residents and have the highest degree of home rule and taxing jurisdiction over them. The home rule authority granted to cities allows them to make their own decisions about their affairs, administration and a good deal of their public policy, subject to state law. Cities are governed by Common Councils consisting of the Mayor (or City Administrator) and Aldermen.
COUNTY
Waukesha County is the third largest populated county among Wisconsin's 72 counties, trailing only Milwaukee County and Dane County. The main legislative entity of Waukesha County is the Board of Supervisors, elected in non-partisan elections for two-year terms. Waukesha County's executive official is the County Executive, also elected in a non-partisan election, but for a longer, four-year term.
